MILAN EXPO 2015

An ancient typology is given new life in the design theme of ‘viaduct’ for the Milan Expo 2015. Loaded with all the energy and narrative of the city of Milan, the Balmond Studio proposal sums up the theme of the Expo: Power for the people and for life. Two carriageways form a ‘wave’ in space, with the larger of the two, ‘The Great Curve’, acting as both renewable energy source and safe pedestrian crossing, enabling a positive impact on both urban and environmental well-being.

A walkway leads pedestrians to the top of the curve, allowing spectacular views of both the Expo and city centre, whilst also functioning as a visual connector. Small balconies surround the great curve, becoming extraordinary meeting places. The other side of the curve can be used for screen advertising, triggering a dialogue between the Expo and the city.
